HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR COUPLES SESSION
WELCOME COUPLES!
To be 100% honest, couples sessions are my FAVORITE sessions to book out of all the services I offer. Don't get me wrong, I love doing senior, maternity, families, etc. sessions as well, but there is nothing I love more than capturing two people's love story. I may also be biased, because I recently got married. Even if I was single, couples sessions would still be my fav! I've always been a hopeless romantic. I am that girl who sobs her eyes out at every romance movie. I cry when I watch someone's wedding video or when I see a cute video of someone getting engaged. I LIVE for these moments!! And I can't wait to capture YOUR moments!
That's where I step in. Committed to capturing unique love stories and adventures. I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do best day in and day out. Just know that I don't do things in halves. Book me, and I'm all in! Down for the ride, up for a dance, and here for the real stuff.
Now, let's capture your beautiful love story. I just wanted to get in touch with a few tips about what to expect, what to wear, and get you excited about how amazing your session is going to be! I want you to be able to look back on these photos forever and love them each time you look at them.
Feeling nervous? Don’t worry! I got you, and I will go to great lengths to make you smile. Even if you’re laughing at me.
LOCKING IT IN
If you haven’t already decided on a date or a time, here are some things to consider:
- When shooting outdoors on a sunny day, the best, most magical lighting for me is either 1-2 hours after sunrise or 1-2 hours before sunset.
- If it’s cloudy, we can shoot basically anytime.
- If we’re shooting indoors, then timing depends on when the place is brightest.
- If you want to be able to use the photos for a ‘Save the Date’ notice, I highly recommend scheduling your session at least four months in advance! This allows a comfortable amount of time for selections, edits, designs, printing, and delivery.
LET'S BE FRIENDS
I’m interested in knowing who you are, what matters to you, what your love language is, what keeps you up at night, and what kind of ice cream you choose every time.
The more comfortable we are around each other, the better your photos will be. I’ll send you over a questionnaire so that we can get to know each other better. Feel free to fire some questions of your own back at me too!
WHAT TO WEAR
Dressing yourself in the morning is tough enough when you don’t have to stand in front of a camera and be your best self.
It’s normal to want to shop for new fancy clothes – but usually, the best route is to go with something that’s comfortable and feels like you.
- Wear something that’ll keep you cool in summer, warm in winter, and that’ll make you feel like the sparkly human that you are on the inside.
- Bring a couple of outfits so that we can play with different options and combinations, and get a little sandy/wet/muddy if you’re game and the moment calls for it!
- If you have anything in your wardrobe that is textured, sheer, or billowy, fabrics that flow turn up so beautifully in photographs.
- Avoid starchy, stiff-seeming garments that get crumpled in weird spots and need adjusting.
- Be careful with prints, logos, and bright colors as sometimes these detract from the most important parts of the photograph – you!
- Avoid matching. You’ll want to find complementary outfits that showcase a variety of textures and colors so you can look good together without looking the same.
- Want more info? I’ve got a full comprehensive guide on this that covers it all! Just let me know and I’ll send it over.
HAIR, MAKEUP, & PROPS
If you feel like getting glammed up, go ahead and get your hair and makeup done. Just try to keep it as natural as possible. Fancy and intricate hairdos can sometimes look a little out of place at home or in a national park, and I love the motion that is captured with hair blowing in the wind.
To add a bit of flare, feel free to bring some jackets, hats, or other potential props.
WHAT TO BRING
Pack things that support your comfort, your energy levels, and your mood. Lots of things fall into this category, like extra clothes for if the weather changes or you get a bit muddy.
- Or snacks for when you’re starting to feel that mid-afternoon slump.
- Or water to keep you feeling hydrated between between shots.
- Or tequila for a bit of liquid courage.
- Or a portable speaker for an impromptu jam session! I always keep a speaker in my camera bag if you forget one!
- It’s all on the table!
GETTING IN THE RIGHT HEADSPACE
There’s a chance you might feel a little bit apprehensive about the idea of a camera following you around for a couple of hours. This is totally normal! But on the shoot day especially, try to make a point of being more loving and sympathetic to one another. Make some time buffers around the day so that you aren’t rushing from one thing to another. When a couple shows up to a shoot having had to run seven red lights to get there, it sets the tone for a rushed and disorganized session. Give yourself the gift of a relaxed session and allow plenty of time for showers, grooming, and forgetting things.
WEATHER
While we can’t control the weather, there are some factors that are in our hands. Let’s discuss Plan Bs for when your dream location only looks good in the sun and it’s bucketing down. Do we reschedule? Do we brave it? Do we shoot somewhere else? Personally, I don’t mind a cloudy day – it’ll make your skin look amazing. And I don’t mind a bit of wind, either. There’s something about the way it adds movement to photos that I’m a real sucker for. And a little drizzle here and there never hurt anyone, right?
Here are some things to consider:
- Bringing an umbrella! Not just functional, but a pretty cute prop too!
- Layer up so you can modify your outfit to the conditions.
- Bring a change of clothes just in case it pours and the sun comes out right afterwards.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You can expect to have a wonderful time. During the photoshoot, don’t worry if you don’t know what to do because I will direct you! Most people instinctively turn towards the camera, but you can expect me to tell you to look at each other. My goal is for you to feel as authentic and comfortable in front of my lens as you can. We’ll dance, chat, walk, and laugh, and you’ll be so busy enjoying yourselves that you’ll forget that you’re having your photos taken.
AFTER THE SESSION
I’ll send you some sneak peeks 48 hours after your session via text, and the full gallery within 6-8 weeks via a downloadable web gallery.
You’ll be able to create favorites lists, share online, or download your images for ‘Save the Date’ notices or framed prints to decorate your home.
THANK YOU
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this guide! I imagine you’ll have a few questions, and if you do, feel free to call me!
Your photos are going to be amazing. I can’t wait!
FAQ
Can i customize my package?
Absolutely! Just let me know the details of what all you are wanting for your session, and we will customize and plan the perfect package and session for you!
can we meet before booking?
Yes, please! Engaging and building relationships with my clients is very important to me, so if you want to meet up for a coffee date and discuss details about your session, just say the word! I am always available throughout the week to jump on a phone call or FaceTime as well!
how will i receive my photos?
You will receive all of your images in a downloadable web gallery. You will use a download pin where you can save whichever photos you'd like to any device. I can also send a step by step tutorial of this process if you need it!
how long until I receive my photos?
Depending on which package and session you book 4-6 weeks is my typical turnaround time. Since I am a full-time student, during the school year it may take me up to 6 weeks. During my summer break (May-August), my turnaround time ranges anywhere from 2-5 weeks. I always update my clients on when they should receive their photos.
how does payment work?
A 40% deposit of your session fee is due upon booking to secure your date. The remaining 60% will be due at least one day prior to your scheduled session date. I will send you an invoice from HoneyBook to your e-mail. There, you will have the option to pay with card or a direct bank transfer.
Do you offer payment plans?
I sure do! I understand that booking with a photographer can be expensive. Just let me know if you'd like to do a payment plan, and we will customize one to best suit your needs!
what should i wear to my session?
I want you to wear something comfortable and what you feel best in! I have created a style guide that goes in depth of what to wear for your session. Just give me the word, and I will send it right over. Also, if you would like to send me your outfit ideas, I would love to help you decide on what will look best for your session!
what is in your camera bag?
I have two camera bodies, a Canon R6 and a Canon 5D Mark II. So, if for some awful reason my camera body poops out on me during your session, I will always have my back up body! I also always carry 3 lenses with me (50mm, 35mm, & 24-70mm). I also have a flash, extra batteries, and SD cards. So, don't worry! I always come prepared. Most importantly, I will always have a speaker in my bag, so we can jam out to your favorite playlist!
how long have you been a photographer?
I started taking photos of my friends and nature back in 2017 with my mom's old, little Canon Rebel. In April of 2022, I decided I wanted to pursue a real photography career. By the start of May 2022, I was booking sessions with clients. In September 2022, I became an official business owner and obtained my LLC.
